MISSION STATEMENT
Courageous Women is an organization, soon to be a nonprofit that celebrates the lives of women through our annual events, workshops, retreats and other special events throughout the year. We celebrate the trials and triumphs, struggles, successes, strengths and courage of women, reminding them of their worth and importance in this world.
At our events, we have guest speakers that come to share their experiences about their own struggles and trials and how they’ve come to where they are in their lives today as well as showing women how they can come out of hardships in ways that are truly victorious and courageous. Courageous Women, Inc. was founded in 1997 from Founder, Toshonna Ross while experiencing abuse at the hands of her then husband and discrimination through her employer at the time. She suffered from extreme low self esteem and trepidation of society due to the mental and physical abuse she’d endured. Toshonna’s mother came to her aid by speaking about her own trials and victories and told Toshonna about her worth and strength in the world. She spoke about her importance as a woman and mother and let her know the power behind speaking up for herself and the power in standing strong. She supported Toshonna and helped her regain control of her life and worth, and in so doing, became a stronger support system and friend. A closer bond was formed between the two women, and the healing process for Toshonna was inevitable. After finally leaving the job that looked upon her for her clerical status rather than a woman, and walking away from the abusive husband that treated her less than a person and almost taking away her life, it was then Toshonna Ross founded Women’s Day Celebration Events as a way to bring women together to talk about their life experiences, drawing strength and encouragement from each other; together realizing their self-worth and importance as women and celebrating them for their power, their strengths, and their courage to stand and rise through the trials of life. Today, Women’s Day Celebration Events is a division of Courageous Women. The name was changed by founder Toshonna Ross to reflect what the organization is about; the courage of women. Having the first annual event in July 2008 amongst twenty-five women collectively, Courageous Women’s supporters grew to over 100 women by January 2009. Currently, approximately 200 women receive the monthly Women’s Day Celebration News (WDC News) that Toshonna creates and whose supporters submit articles and news every month to be shared amongst the women. The purpose of Courageous Women is to encourage, empower and inspire the lives of all women.
